Dial M for Murder
Syracuse Stage

Designing my first realistic period interior set in thirty years for Dial M for Murder at Syracuse Stage was a delightful challenge. Director Bob Hupp had noted this style was "sorely missing" from my portfolio, and I embraced the opportunity to create a meticulously detailed 1950s London apartment for this classic thriller. The design features rich teal walls, elegant architectural details, and warm mid-century modern furnishings—creating the perfect backdrop for both the sophisticated characters and the pivotal murder scene.
This production exemplified the power of true artistic collaboration. From Emily Holm's brilliant paint finishes to Mara Rich's custom-built props (including an Art Deco bar and fight-choreography-ready desk), to Dawn Chiang's cinematic lighting that perfectly illuminated the actors while preserving the set's realism. The result was so immersive that audience members commented, "If we didn't know we were in Syracuse, we would have sworn we were watching a Broadway play."
Take a look at some of the process and final production materials below. Want to go backstage and learn about creating the perfect loaction for murder?
