WarholCapote
American Repertory Theater

WarholCapote is an ingenious, captivating play based upon Andy Warhol's cassette taped recordings of his and Truman Capote's conversations.
My big idea for the scenery was to abstract a Cassette Tape and have the tape unspooling which would create an avant-guard & surreal sculpture that encompassed the actors. The physical "tape" used in the set was laminated brushed silver and was suspended from the theatre's grid with over 300 attachment points.
Director Michael Mayer wanted it to look like a talk show, hence the two orange mid-century modern Egg Chairs and table. The portals were the exact proportions of a cassette tape with the leading onstage edge being illuminated. Darrel Maloney designed the projections for the back of the set and Kevin Adam's lighting design made the the swirling cassette tape come alive with pop colors evocative on Andy's art.
